The English Bill of Rights
The American Bill of rights was passed by Parliament in 1789. The Bill of Rights is a document that states our constitutional rights, including: our freedom of speech and press, the right to assemble peacefully, the right to petition the ruler, no soldier should be quartered at a home unless the owner allows it, no one can search your house without the owner's permission, it gives people the right to bear arms for our defense, and many others.
Before it was passed by Parliament, the Bill of Rights was drafted at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787. James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights because many states wanted stronger constitutional rights to protect their freedom. Many states were worried because the Constitution didn’t say anything about a limit to the kings power. The Bill of Rights puts a limit on government power.
The House of Representatives approved 17 of the original amendments. The Senate approved 12 of the 17 amendments. After that, the Bill of Rights was sent to the states in August, 1789. On December, 15 the last changes were made. 10 of the 12 amendments were approved.

The Olive Branch Petition
John Dickinson the Olive Branch Petition in hopes of achieving peace. He explained that the colonies were unhappy with his policies. Sadly the King of Britain refused the petition. Congress adopted this on July 5, 1775. The reason that in was called the Olive Branch Petition was that the olive branch is an ancient symbol for peace and this is what Dickinson was trying to achieve with this petition.
